Routes to fertility
It’s not always easy to know where to start with fertility treatment.
We’re going to do everything we can to help you choose the right option for you and hence the best course of treatment.
Your fertility can be assessed through the NHS Reproductive Medicine Clinic, if you’re eligible for NHS funding; or privately through our private fertility assessment clinic.
NHS fertility clinic
If you’ve been experiencing difficulties achieving a pregnancy, your initial fertility investigations can take place at Bath Fertility.
Reproductive Medicine Clinic
We hold Reproductive Medicine Clinics regularly on behalf of the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The Reproductive Medicine Clinic offers a comprehensive range of specialist investigations and treatments for couples presenting with fertility problems.
If you would like to attend this clinic at Bath Fertility, ask your GP to refer you directly or through the NHS E-Referral system, which makes it simple and convenient for you to make your appointment. Wait times are short.
Eligibility for NHS funding
Regardless of where you live in England, you can choose to be seen at Bath Fertility as a NHS patient. To understand whether you qualify for NHS funding, please contact our friendly team or check with your GP.
Diagnosis of fertility issues
Various initial medical tests and investigations are necessary for us to accurately diagnose your fertility issues. Most of these tests can be arranged by your GP, and the results supplied to us with your referral letter.
We strongly advise that these tests have been taken before seeing us, as this will avoid delays in treatment. Please speak to us if you are in any doubt as to which tests need to be done by your GP in advance of your consultation.
Investigations and treatments are for you as couple rather than individual, so we always prefer both partners to attend the first appointment together. At your first appointment, we’ll talk through your medical histories. A vaginal ultrasound scan will be performed to check the uterus and ovaries and you will be shown the images as we make them.
Private fertility clinic
Private fertility investigations
If you’ve been trying to become pregnant without success and would like to have fertility investigations privately, we offer these at Bath Fertility.
Accurate diagnosis is important when deciding on the right course of treatment. A series of investigations will take place using the most advanced technology.
Your first consultation includes an ultrasound scan and semen analysis. The following initial blood screening tests will need to be arranged; some may have been undertaken by your GP. These include:
- Rubella; if not immune you will need the vaccination before treatment to become pregnant.
- Chlamydia Serology (not swabs)
- Day 1-3 FSH & LH
- Day 21 Progesterone
Your partner will need to have a semen analysis.
Fertility treatments, such as IVF or ICSI may be recommended. You and your partner will then need additional blood tests; Hep B, C and HIV.

Single women and couples
We understand that you may not be planning to start a family in the near future, but would like the reassurance that you are not suffering from any fertility issues. At Bath Fertility, we’re able to identify potential fertility problems, such as severe endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, lack of ovulation, depleting egg reserve. For male partners we will conduct a semen analysis.
If you’re a single man and would like the reassurance that your sperm count is within the normal parameters, you may arrange a semen analysis with us.
It’s possible for the result to be available within 30 to 60 minutes. One of our experienced embryologists will be to discuss the results with you, if you wish to wait.
