Lauren and Michael’s story
“At the age of 27 I found out that carrying a child could prove to be fatal. Not just for me but for my baby too. I was born with a very rare and serious heart condition and my parents were told I wouldn’t live to see my first birthday.
Miraculously my heart managed to cope and I didn’t need any surgery until I was ten years old. After four open heart operations I was as ‘fixed’ as I could be. Although I felt perfectly healthy, my consultant warned me that the pressures of pregnancy and child birth could be gravely dangerous. This came as a shock to me and my husband as fertility issues were something we’d never given a thought to. Just when we thought our dreams of becoming parents were slipping away, my older sister Ebony made an astonishing offer. She offered to carry our baby for us! We were absolutely over the moon and so utterly grateful.
After talking to our GP we were referred to Bath Fertility. Bath was one of the few clinics that offered gestational surrogacy and luckily for us we were only a two hours drive away. After looking up Bath’s success rates we were so pleased that we were referred here and that it was so close.
When we received a letter with our first appointment we were all so excited! From the minute we were first welcomed at Bath Fertility to when we left with our 7 week scan photos, our treatment was second to none.
Our consultant, Dr Walker, was so supportive right from the start. He explained the whole process to us and gave us hope that our story would be one of success. As our treatment started we met our Fertility Nurses – Clare and Helen. Both of these ladies were absolutely amazing and made us feel so comfortable.
Our first round of ICSI produced three viable embryos. Sadly two of these ended in chemical pregnancies and one just simply failed. We were all devastated and, after all the heart ache, were in two minds as to whether we go ahead with a second round. We are so thankful that we did as after our first and only embryo transfer in November 2017, we were elated to have a positive result. We attended our 7 week scan and all cried with happiness to see a little flicker of a heartbeat.
After nine months of excitement we finally welcomed our little girl into the world on 24 July 2018. Of course we are forever grateful to my sister but if it wasn’t for the skill and expertise of the team at Bath Fertility we would never have known the unconditional love you feel when you first hold your baby.
Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts”.
